Semantic Properties of (Non-)Floating Quantifiers and their Syntactic Implications1

چکیده
It is well-known that, in Japanese, classifier phrases (ClPs) (e.g., 3 classifier) or measure phrases (MPs) (e.g., 3 liters) can ‘float’ in that they can be separated from the host noun, as in (1b) and (2b).2 ClPs and MPs in this configuration are referred to as floating quantifiers (FQs), and their non-floated counterparts in (1a) and (2a) in which ClPs or MPs are adjacent to their host noun are referred to as non-floating quantifiers (non-FQs).

The Syntactic and Semantic Roots of Floating Quantification
Through the study of floating quantifiers in a variety of languages, I demonstrate that floating quantification is not a uniform phenomenon and outline a series of puzzles that force us to adopt a two-part analysis. I argue that certain floating quantifiers are related to their nominal associate by syntactic transformation (the stranding approach, Sportiche 1988; Miyagawa 1989) and that others ...
متن کاملFloating Quantifiers and Lexical Specification of Quantifier Retrieval
Floating quantifiers (FQs) in English exhibit both universal and language-specific properties, and this paper shows that such syntactic and semantic characteristics can be explained in terms of a constraint-based, lexical approach to the construction within the framework of Head-Driven Phrase Structure Grammar (HPSG). Based on the assumption that FQs are base-generated VP modifiers, this paper ...
متن کاملAn Ontological Semantic Account of Relative Quantification in English
This paper proposes a linguistic analysis of the semantic behavior of relative quantifiers in English, those for which an absolute value cannot be determined, with attention to the differences in properties and meaning between individual quantifiers and the semantic subclasses created by these quantifiers. Represented formally within Ontological Semantic Technology (OST), the semantic nature of...
متن کاملVerbs in Applied Linguistics Research Article Introductions: Semantic and syntactic analysis
This study aims to investigate the semantic and syntactic features of verbs used in the introduction section of Applied Linguistics research articles published in Iranian and international journals. A corpus of 20 research article introductions (10 from each journal) was used. The corpus was analysed for the syntactic features (tense, aspect and voice) and semantic meaning of verbs. The finding...
